  1. The Gospel of  John                                   Lesson  18.

  3.                   Chapter 17.  Intercessory Prayer.
  4.  
  5.      There are many wonderful prayers in the Bible, such as
  6. Solomon's (1 Kings 8) and David's (Ps. 51) but none can compare
  7. with this.  It is superb.  Other prayers show that the men were
  8. mortals calling on God but this prayer shows that the man Christ
  9. Jesus is the Son of God.
  10.  
  11.      Jesus' farewell message was finished.  Now He addresses the
  12. Father to Whom He is responsible and for Whom He has come into the
  13. world.  v. 1, 24, - Father; v. 5 - O Father; v. 11 - Holy
  14. Father; v. 25 - O Righteous Father.  This is a most intimate
  15. conversation between the Son of God and His Father at the close of
  16. His ministry.  "THE HOUR HAS COME."

  18. He prays for:--
  19.  
  20. I.  HIMSELF, THE SON OF GOD. v. 1-5.
  21.  
  22. 1st request.........Glorify thy Son. v.  Glory by the way of the
  23.                     Cross, Resurrection and Ascension.
  24.                     v.2. Eternal life a gift.
  25.                     v.3. Eternal life defined.
  26.                     v.4. The goal--to finish the work.
  27.                     The purpose--to glorify the Father.
  28.  
  29. 2nd request.........The Son requests His Eternal Glory again, only
  30.                     now He is to receive it in the glorified body
  31.                     of His humanity v.5.
  32.  
  33. 2.  HIS DISCIPLES.
  34.  
  35. v. 6-19. The disciples are the Father's and the Son's
  36. very own.
  37.  
  38. 3rd request.........That the disciples might be kept by the
  39.                     Father. (v.11-15)
  40.                     Kept unto unity. v.11.
  41.                     Kept unto salvation.  v. 12
  42.                     Kept from evil. v. 15.
  43.  
  44. 4th request.........Sanctification through God's truth, His Word.
  45.                     v.17-19
  46.                     Christ consecrated Himself so that we might be
  47.                     consecrated in Him.
  48.  
  49. 3.HIS CHURCH.  v. 20-26.
  50.  
  51. 5th request.........For her unity in the Father and in the Son.
  52.                     v.21a.
  53.  
  54. 6th request.........That the world may believe and know that the
  55.                     Father had sent the Son.(v.21b), and that the
  56.                     Father loves the Church even as the Father
  57.                     loved the Son. v. 23.  The Glory--the Holy
  58.                     Spirit.  Unity in the Holy Spirit. v. 22-23.
  59.                     This will be fulfilled in the last day revival
  60.                     and perfection of the Church. Eph. 4:11-16,
  61.                     5:25-27.
  62. 7th request.........For the Glorification of the Church.v. 24-26.
  63.                     "that they .... be with where I am..."
  64.                     "that they may behold My Glory...."
  65.  
  66.                     The eternal love of the Father for the Son is
  67.                     the fountainhead or source of the plan of
  68.                     salvation. v. 24c "For Thou lovest He before
  69.                     the foundation of the world 
  70.                     Cf. 1 Pet. 1:19-20, Eph. 1:4

  72. Note.  The Name of the Father, the LORD, the "I Am", has been
  73. manifested in and through the Name of the Son, the LORD JESUS.
  74. v. 6--manifest the Name,
  75. v. 11-12--kept in the Name,
  76. v. 26 manifest the Name in the past and future.
